A few water damage monsters round here, South Glos. They seem to be where joints in the tarmac have opened up around patched repairs or drain covers.
The water pressurised by car tyres bites into the road surface and exploits any weak points. I have logged some on www.fillthathole.org.uk but in some cases, until the patchwork road is properly resurfaced, this will be a recurring problem.
I had a NSF damage from a pothole several years back when i lived in Dorset, tried to get compo from council but they were not playing ball. its disgusting with the amount of road tax this gov gets and the roads are in a poor stateWell as a cyclist, you'll start driving round the 'pot holes'. The holes have trashed my anti-roll bar links - had all 4 replaced on the car this year, and the rear ones have gone again !

Well I can report that the moon crater has been filled (and has become a pimple - why can't they fill the thing to make a level surface!!!).Have you reported all those potholes. A monster one opened up before Christmas (the sort you avoid in a car) and I assumed due to it's size it would have already been reported. But it certainly hadn't been reported online at the main sites. I still need to take a photo of it as I think it tends to get them fixed faster when they can actually see you aren't exaggerating but we will see how fast they fix it now that the Christmas break is over.
So if you haven't reported those craters .... get logging them NOW!!! It's very easy.
don't you need to prove it was reported beforehand? which is where those 'fillmyhole' sites help
Please, dear readers, whatever you do, do NOT google "fillmyhole". Trust me on this.
