Makes you wonder what our car tax gets spent on? it was`nt til i started cycling that i noticed how bad our roads actualy are.

one of our rural lanes has a section where 1/2 of the road has slipped into the ditch and the other 50% is conned off! whats amusing about that is that the cars have to drive into the 'hole' to pass through. Theres a section of 6 inch wide tarmac you can just get a bike through.

Well as a cyclist, you'll start driving round the 'pot holes'. The holes have trashed my anti-roll bar links - had all 4 replaced on the car this year, and the rear ones have gone again !

A few water damage monsters round here, South Glos. They seem to be where joints in the tarmac have opened up around patched repairs or drain covers.

The water pressurised by car tyres bites into the road surface and exploits any weak points. I have logged some on www.fillthathole.org.uk but in some cases, until the patchwork road is properly resurfaced, this will be a recurring problem.

Yup!

I did one on there 3 months back, to be fair it was repaired within a week but the filling is now completely gone and the hole is as deep as ever. Will report again but you are right, repairs do not last and a complete resurface is needed.

I had a NSF damage from a pothole several years back when i lived in Dorset, tried to get compo from council but they were not playing ball. its disgusting with the amount of road tax this gov gets and the roads are in a poor state:angry:

OY SWEAR BOX!!!

you mean "its disgusting with the amount of tax this gov gets and the roads are in a poor state" ;)

don't you need to prove it was reported beforehand? which is where those 'fillmyhole' sites help

Have you reported all those potholes. A monster one opened up before Christmas (the sort you avoid in a car) and I assumed due to it's size it would have already been reported. But it certainly hadn't been reported online at the main sites. I still need to take a photo of it as I think it tends to get them fixed faster when they can actually see you aren't exaggerating but we will see how fast they fix it now that the Christmas break is over.

So if you haven't reported those craters .... get logging them NOW!!! It's very easy.
Well I can report that the moon crater has been filled (and has become a pimple - why can't they fill the thing to make a level surface!!!).

The road where I live is in a bad state again; more a shallow trench than a pothole. I have to cycle around it nowadays.

gettin warmer??
the rainfall was pretty mild in the nw compared to darrn sarrf but I for one have defenitely come across more pot holes after christmas than before. I can understand that Ice can break up our road surfaces but I'm a bit shocked really to see that they are breaking up due to rain water.

I hit one yesterday. It was extremely wide, and by the time I spotted it, it was too late to move out so I just had to brace myself. Thankfully, my wheels are both still true. Thank God for cheap, heavy wheels!

Last year I cycled for 500 miles along the river Elbe, an area of Germany that has far harder winters than in the southern UK and as I was mostly along side the river, it's a area that is prone to regular flooding.

I see more potholes on my daily 5 mile journey into London than I did in 500 miles in Germany.

(Same applies to Holland, Denmark, Austria, Belgium, but not to France, Czech Rep. or Eire)

as i work for the local highways, and by the way our roads are bad! 50% of the damage is caused by rain and heavy traffik, the other 50% is caused by bad tarmac and workmanship, mostly contractors. i seen potholes appear in a matter of days, and its all down to the base layer being of crap quality or not being rolled properly. if the base layer becomes loose under the top surface then water just flows through it and erodes from under the top surface.
if you do come foul of potholes, or concerns of potholes, my experience is call your local councillor and keep on his/her case, the council jump to councillors complaints.
