Apparently I could 'save' up to £32 a year by changing to DD, which, going by various numbers quoted on here, will be more expensive in terms of money 'actually' leaving my account.

But you can always get that credit back while that £32 a year (every year remember) is gone for good. I would rather be in credit a bit than pay £32 extra every year.
Obviously being £500 in credit is getting a bit silly but at least I am earning bank beating interest...….
