The last time you accused me of peddling cliche you were simply wrong (on Germany) - you could start by admitting that. And you are out of order here too. Stick to the argument you are making (which is a valid one, although I disagree with it).

The 2002 world cup showed it (not just because of the heat and hosting it on another continent) as did the 2004 and 2008 euro championships, various bits of the last 5 african cup of nations and so on. Fortunately the world cup moved on from the old system of 24 teams and so we're able to benefit from this. If you'd said all this and then said some of the smaller teams it's taken them a world cup or two to find their feet and a bit more experience I might have agreed. I heard plenty of the cliches at a bbq I went to late last night where people didn't really bother watching any of the games other than England ones.
