I'm not aware these two latest are any worse than those we've been through (a lot worse) before. And society has always coped before.

Yes and no to that because some aspects of society have changed and you need to move with that.
During Storm Arwen a lot of people who had switched heat-pumps where in serious trouble after a few days with no source of heat, previously most people had coal or gas so they had another option.

So, whilst I'm not suggesting there is no reason for Government giving warnings, I don't see these storms as any "proof of the need".

Not even for those who have lost power for days?

You need to stockpile some essentials to cope with the lack of electricity
Well I'm only stockpiling 4 hrs electricity (but could get inverter out and connect up to car I suppose).

Haven't run my Central Heating system for many many years, haven't had the boiler on for years.

But then when you get frequent power cuts you get used to coping without electricity.

well as I recall from only 6 years ago, Im expecting a sudden increase in unrelated shed fires from the incorrect storage of flammable liquids again
When I lived in France (20 years ago) paraffin heating was very widespread. Most supermarkets would sell 20L containers in 3 different qualities. Heaters were great (from any DIY store), portable room heaters with thermostats, etc), very different from the death traps we used to have when I was much younger and in the UK

When I came back to live in UK brought a couple of the heaters back with me but getting the paraffin in the UK was a non-starter.

I dont believe its winter storms thats prompted this, the national energy system operator recently warned demand might exceed supply this winter, leading to power outages. OFWAT have made warnings about water supplies due to demand exceeding supply from reservoirs. Supermarkets have made similar warnings about food chain supply issues, which have really high risks caused by disruption to their just in time delivery model, remember when lettuce suddenly disappeared off the shelves, or bread. What happens if a major logistics firm goes bust because of the cost of diesel and the cost of doing business has trippled.and supermarkets get no deliveries. One of my local supermarkets fridges broke (they werent cyberattacked) earlier this year, it took weeks for them to actually restock properly.

I mean blimey Spain only last year lost their national grid for a day, and some places took 3 days to recover properly, and you couldnt pay by card, or really do anything but sit and wait it out.
