Another popular one with kids is Warhammer. Type of war board game but you collect the figures and paint them (and battle with them). Popular at our local senior schools where they have Warhammer clubs. Bit expensive and probably a geek type pastime, but hey I'm a geek!

Collected this from the age of 9ish till early 13ish...very addictive, very expensive, very geeky, very uncool..... be careful what you are starting here if you buy them some of this!...but although it did cost me ALL my money over these years, it was good fun.

mini pool table, mini table tennis table are great ideas. Their own TV could also be a good one. A ticket to something as a main present would be good...but at that age you want something more permenant I reckon. I used to hate it when people get me educational stuff....used to get enough education at school, nevermind while playing with toys!

Made the mistake of wandering into the Games Workshop in Merry Hill once. About an hour later we were still backing towards the door away from an excitable shop assistant asking us to try and throw 3 5s, so that we could move a wizard an inch across a piece of sand-covered cardboard.

If you can fit in a table tennis table I'd second the table football table instead. They're a blast and the four of you can just get on it and play. Takes time to learn table tennis. We used to have one, it was great. Lent it out and it got wasted.

Forget War-hammer! Once you meet the sweaty nerds who play it you'll want to be as far away from them as you can get. Life has to be pretty empty before War-hammer is interesting!

Table football !!!

My 2 daughters - 15 & 11 years - and 1 son - 8 years old - love playing this.

We got a really cheapo table top one last Xmas & it's been used constantly. We're thinking of getting a better one this year.

Also, the youngest got an air hockey game for his birthday last week. only a small one (2ft x 1ft), but all the kids love it.

We did have a table football and it was great fun. It got damp in the shed and went to the great table football heaven in the sky. I think table tennis is in vogue with them at the moment.

It takes all sorts Mr. Pig. But at least they're not on the streets mugging old ladies. Warhammer is the new Airfix. Plus I like painting Orcs, thanks very much. ;)

I was going to put something along these lines but Wafflycat beat me to it.
We must have been rich when I was a kid though because we had some walnuts and half a crown along with the satsuma in the sock (and it really was a sock when I was a kid).

The paining on these things is really good I must admit. I loved building kits when I was younger but it takes too long.

I don't think it's the same as Airfix. The main pleasure in the kits was making them. Endless rules and throws of the die to move the kits around is another thing altogether!

When he was much smaller (high school age), WCMnr was seriously into Warhammer. He had loads of armies, spent ages building & painting models large & small. Plus loads of books on rules and the like. His mates were the same, and many times the whole lot of them spent the entire weekend night at Chez Wafflycat doing Warhammer battles. The kitchen table would be pulled out to its full size, a big MDF slab put on top of it to make it even bigger and battle would commence. I'd provide the pizza, snacks & drinks and they'd be happy as anything playing Warhammer all night. The crowd that came round were never any hassle at all. Even though they've 'grown-up' & gone their different ways as regards work/uni, they've remained friends over the years.
