My OHs Liv bike has a press fit BB which has started to get stiff, so will need replacing.
I do most repairs on our bikes and wondered if it is worth buying BB removal and installation tools to replace these or take it to the bike shop?
Also which BB press fit tools are worth buying ?

I have a bb30 bottom bracket which needs replacing must have replaced it bi annually.

Worth having the tool.

Good afternoon,

I bought one of the cheapo tools that you hit with a hammer, it broke the press fit unit rather than drive it out!

Yes this is a press fit BB (BB72), the tool broke the "ridge" and pushed the bearing out of the cup, leaving the cup in the frame!

I made the mistake of buying something cheap because I wasn't going to use it often and the better tool was described in as being unsuitable.

I let somebody else do mine, so when it goes south its there problem to sort. I made a point of ditching my press fit bike and wouldn't have another.

Barnet,
I haven't got a bike with pressfit BB shells, and having read over the last few years the problems cyclists are having with them, I don't think i want one anytime soon.

I’ve only done one press-fit BB (BB30) and did them the ghetto way - drifted them out with a punch and back in again with a socket, much like doing motorcycle wheel bearings. It all turned out OK.

I do now have a multi purpose bearing press that I’ve used for headsets but would do a BB too.

I take mine to my LBS. It only needs doing around about every 6K miles or so (which for me means 18 months). It doesn't seem worth buying the tool for something that only needs doing that often.

Not sure what point there is in quoting how often time wise they need replacing without any context as to distance, since I don't think they go off or rot

I've done a few press fits with a press i bought off ebay that came with different size dies.Drifted out with a punch. The one on my Canyon came out easily as the faces had been greased.
You can get a Ninja bb that actually threads together on the central tube. You would need the tool though to wind each side in.Supposed to be better as the bearings are more likely to be in line and hence less wear.
