Presta or schrader?

Not bothered but I always buy Presta.

All my current bikes are presta but that is just because presta is norm on a narrower road rim, if shrader was the norm it'd be shra der. All bikes I grew up with were shrader and my first hybrid but having experience of both (presta & shrader) I've no particular preference as long as they work.

Woods valves are a pain if you don't have a screw down mini pump or track pump available.

They work fine with my clamp-type pump. I've also got an old-style frame pump that works on them, but I prefer my mini pump.

Not sure I'd know how to use one if I ever did come across a woods valve.

You remove the valve collar by unscrewing it, then lift the valve core out, take the failed tube off its bottom and put the new one on, put the valve core back in and put the collar back on... but nearly all new ones seem to be BB valves now, which don't use the tube. I put a picture of a BB valve earlier. Here's a rubber tube one, for comparison:

It's a long time since I've had to 'use' a Woods valve; I was young and didn't know what I was doing. I think I ended up unscrewing the valve in error. The only valves I've ever had problems with were Schrader valves that slowly leaked and gave more resistance than was due when pumping air in. The offending tubes were bought together, so there's a high chance it was a faulty batch, but it put me off.
