Greetings, Preston commuters!

I went for a ride today and ended up coming through Preston at about 4.30 this afternoon. It was not a pleasant experience. Essentially, what I would like to know is the best way to get from north of the city to the south and vice versa. I live in Bolton and I don't have a rubber dinghy so me and my Ribble want to cross the Ribble over a bridge. What would be your recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Mike.

I was looking at something like that a while ago because I wanted to go and check out the Commonwealth Games Road Race circuit at Rivington. Assuming you don't really want to go anywhere near Preston, I reckon this could be your scenic gateway to the Ribble Valley via Ribchester!

Hi, Colin,

Thank you very much for going to the trouble of creating your map for me. In actual fact I had gone out in the morning using an almost identical route to Ribchester (I quite like the A675 through Belmont and Abbey Village if I'm travelling at a quiet time of day) but after crossing at Ribchester I then headed west to Blackpool. If I'd retraced my route I'd probably still be pedalling now!

I'm sure there must be a relatively easy route through Preston (there's sign-posts for cyclists all over the place) it's just that I don't know what it is

Hope to see you soon.

Thank you very much for that, nilling.

Do you (or anyone else) have any suggestions for approaching Preston from the Fylde, Kirkham direction?

Thanks again.

Through the lovely hamlet of Penworthamdale!

Yes, Crisscross, the horrible A6 was part of the reason for my initial request

Nilling, thank you for the riverside route. I think I'll look into accessing the Avenham Park bit from my end too, so that I can make my way through Preston easily. All roads north and north-west of Bolton seem to pass through Preston and I want to make it as smooth an experience as possible.

Thanks again.

It is pretty tricky/ long winded to bypass the A6.

I'm no expert, but there is a relatively decent cycle path from Bamber Bridge through to Avenham Park across the old Tram Bridge.

From there you can go along the river to Broadgate, along Strand Road and through the docks.

From there I'd go up Pedders Lane onto Blackool Road and right into Lea Road.

From there to get to Kirkham you can turn left at Blackleach Lane which takes you past The Hand and Dagger.

We often do this route with our children when cycling to Blackpool, via Kirkham, Freckleton, Lytham and St Annes - it's windy ( often in both senses) but quietish.

Or to get past the Broughton section of the A6 heading north carry on and eventually turn right, you'll hit the A6 at Barton or further north.

Maybe someone has the Manchester - Blackpool charity ride route, which goes through the docks at Preston and out through to Kirkham.

It's funny - I did the Manchester-Blackpool a few years ago and I have absolutely no recollection of the Preston section. Anyway, I found what is supposed to be the -> route of the 2008 M-B.

It's on the wrong side of Preston for Blackburn though isn't it?
