I'm sure you actually believe that, and it's forgivable, given that only one point of view was reported by the popular media at the time, but the sycophancy and pseudo-grief was by no means universal, as the article linked to by @slowmotion demonstrates. I don't think anyone among my social circle ever gave a f*** about Diana, either before or after her death. That's nothing to do with being 'trendy', it's that she was wholly irrelevant to most of us.

+1, none of my friends were remotely interested either..

I woke up to a dirge on the clock radio, got up and went downstairs.

Put the telly on, loads of industrial strength weeping and wailing going on outside Buck House with an enormous pile of flowers.

My first thought was 'Oh, the Queen mother has finally snuffed it' and wandered off to make breakfast thinking 'Oh flip, they're going to be banging on about all this crap I don't care about for days on end'.

Came back with coffee and breakfast, realised it was the arch manipulator and thought 'That's really going to bugger up the TV scheduling now...'

Got sick to death of the BBC telling me I was apparently partaking in an outpouring of grief...
