In practice they are both quite simple. If you have priority or right of way but the car isn't going to stop and will hit you if you continue, then YOU stop.

In theory, argue away to your hearts content but remember the above when you have 2 tons of metal heading towards you. Common sense is a wonderful thing.
 
I think this may be aimed at me???
I always thought "right of way" was the correct term. I will try and remember to use priority in future, but can't promise I won't get it wrong again.

Use whatever term you want, in the big scheme of things it doesn't really matter.
