I don't see the point myself (I don't have option anyway) but it does no harm and if you know what you're doing, you can make money by trading in them.

As has been said it depends on what you want on the plate. Usually the less numbers/letters the more expensive, or if you want something like ORG45M that will cost you a bob or two.

I have one, with my name on. It cost me 250 all in from the DVLA site.
There are many places to buy from, most of them show a price and on top of that there are the transfer fees etc. With the DVLA site the price you see is the price you pay and its generally cheaper in my experience.

Invest in something if you want to make money but this is not to be confused with driving round like a total twat advertising their bad taste.

Basically they.....
spell out your name - so what!
are some sort of weak joke - ok for the first week.
are shorter than other plates - leaving you ugly blank bits on the plate.
flaunt your wealth - thus attracting attention from a yob with a sharp object in his hand to scratch your car.

Why would anyone want any of these?
I do however really object to having to drive around with the age of my car displayed on it. This is really something that has been brought in for the benefit of the car industry not the public. There is no reason to date car plates. I would be tempted to get a non date plate. Or just go to northern ireland to get my car.

Oooh that DVLA website is good. Just viewed M (march) 70 (1970) LML (initials) on an Aston Martin!!! So it's £250 including the car then?

So you dont want one and dont like them. Hey thats fine its your opinion which I respect.
But at least express it in an adult way instead of calling someone a 'Tw*t'

I agree with this bit and I've often been tempted to get something non-age related. I still haven't got a round tuit but it's the only reason I would ever buy a private plate.

It depends how much interest you have in cars!

Personally, my interest in cars extends as far as:
(a) how quickly can it accelerate me out of danger? (e.g. entering a busy roundabout)
( how much equipment can I get in it? (the more the better!)
(c) how comfortable is it to drive?
(d) how cheap is it to run? (this includes fuel, servicing, reliability, etc)

And that's pretty much that! What it looks like or what plate it has? I couldn't care less ...

They're not that expensive. I was quoted a fortune for personalised plates by the DVLA but my local auto factors made me a set for less than a tenner.

I once saw M1NGE on a BMW, then read a press report that it was never issued because it was considered offensive. So I guess the guy had made a false plate up. Naughty naughty.
