You're obviously still alive and have found your way back to your computer so why worry? And guess what.... getting lost is the quickest way to learn new routes. If you use a GPS you will never know where you are and when the batteries fail you will be well and truly goosed.
Not only that but using GPS is like reading the map down a rolled up tube - you miss all the interesting little variations and attractions that are just off your route waiting to tempt you into straying. Some of my most interesting encounters have happened when I've strayed off route.
