I'm not going to risk my expensive bikes by doing my own maintenance, bike shops are insured against damaged caused, I am not. Well I might be for accidental damage but with an excess bigger than having a shop do it.

I also have better things to do with my time than spending time doing bike maintenance which I have no interest in, like earning the bucks to pay someone else

"In narrow usage, not all expertise is considered a profession. Although sometimes referred to as professions, occupations such as skilled construction and maintenance work are more generally thought of as trades or crafts. The completion of an apprenticeship is generally associated with skilled labor or trades such as carpenter, electrician, mason, painter, plumber and other similar occupations. " - Wikipedia

Not if you earn more in that time than you save. You pay a bike mechanic £20 for an hour changing your bearings. During that period you are undertaking consultancy work in your profession at £250 per hour . You may not in which case you are probably best of changing your own bearings.
