So you've never paid someone to make you coffee, pull you a pint or carry a plate from a kitchen to a table. There are plenty of jobs we could do for ourselves, but I'm all for someone trying to make a career out of it.
you go into a pub and try and pull your own pint you would wake up wih a crowd round you,

Bike 'fixing' is getting more and more specialist - EPS/DI2 ??? Specific torque settings for carbon - or a knowledge by hand what you should be cranking it up to. Most folk I know can't change a tyre on a kids bike.

Basic stuff ain't cheap. Tube - good quality one £4- £5 and then time to check tyre and change, may be 10 minutes. That's still a good £5 or more of chargeable time - wages and shop overhead. So a tube costs £10 to change. You can get a cheapo tube for £2 but a shop won't fit one due to potential failure. And they check the tyre for crap.

Yes, a tube change takes us good amateur cyclist's 10 minutes to do, but that's our time - shop time it's a few quids. You can see how the costs add up !!

Likewise in a bikeshop, if anyone just walked in and tried to use the tools, they're not going to get a friendly reaction, but that isn't the point you are failing to make.

You seemed to be implying that it's a joke to have a job that basically anyone could do for themselves. So you never make use of any services then?

I do all my own servicing. But, unless you are confident, or prepared to do it, that's where the bike shop comes in. Cycling is popular, but folk forget, it still costs a fair few £££'s per hour to employ someone to fix a bike. Yeh, your bike might cost £300, but if it needs a full service, then there is about £20 per hour staff cost, plus shop overheads, plus a little bit for the margin, a bit for recovery of tooling costs... You'll pay silly money for a basic oil change on your car that takes 10 minutes ?
