I used to use the High5 Protein Recovery shake after long rides because I thought it was the done thing, then when it ran out I didn't bother buying any more, partly due fiscal embarrassment and partly because I wasn't sure it was making much difference.

Then this weekend I was staying at the in-laws and after a forty mile ride my brother in law offered me some of his chocolate High5 which I mixed with milk, and it tasted lovely! It also appeared to abate the brutal hunger that I have the morning/ afternoon the date after a long ride.

Did I imagine this benefit or is there something in it?

Protein replacement drinks do seem to work, but try "normal" chocolate milk as a low cost alternative, or even standard cow's milk. Chocolate milk doesn't need to be kept in the fridge (if you're away from home) and of course tastes of chocolate !

i have some whey protein which I'm using up. Once that's gone then going to have a little cheese and glass of milk; plenty of protein there!

if i'm splashing out i'll go for the "for goodness shake", however most of the time, i cant afford them. I find a mix of Whey protein and dextrose/malodextrin does the job for me! Buy it in bulk from somewhere like myprotein and its not too expensive at all.
however if not that i might have some whey and then some form of simple carbs

One of these http://www.myprotein.com/sports-nutrition/impact-diet-whey/10530657.html (voucher code: MP650800) after a ride helps me get through until meal time.

I've half a tub of whey at home, which I have not touched in a year.

Real food is much better than that processed stuff.

Banana or a pear and a glass or two of water when straight in; a cup of Co-op 99 tea about 10 mins after return, sometimes sneak a small glass of kids chocolate milk - then a proper meal after clean up.

Two 'home grown' poached eggs on wholemeal toast for breakfast the morning after - more tea.

Carrots and apples to fill in the hunger pangs in between, plenty of water.
