Have you been through the shared area at Sloane Square? It's very disconcerting. I've been through on the bike and in the car. It's a lot easier on the bike as you can weave through pedestrians but in the car it's a nightmare. You have to slow right down!!

Is the shared space just be the tube station? I went around it last month in the car and it didn't seem to be much different from when I was up there before when they didn't have a 'shared space'.

How dreadful!

Any fule kno that the purpose of the bits between buildings in cities is to move cars as quickly as possible from one place to another, surely?

It amazes me that the planners don't, a) just close Exhibition Road to traffic, include a minimally raised curb or narrow cobbled lane(like those marking the cycle lanes on the A206 in South London)so young, blind or disabled pedestrians can be away from the traffic in some comfort and c) still have controlled crossings.

I am more in favour of motorised traffic being taken off certain roads completely rather than having drivers getting more frustrated in these sort of spaces.

IMO as work has already started on this particular project I'm wondering if K&C Council have been thorough in their consultations with local residents.

Yes. Depends on day of week and time of day but on a Saturday it's just a constant stream of pedestrians crossing to and from the tube station. There used to be a controlled crossing for peds but that has now gone and the road and pavement are all at the same level.

It's a bit half baked because it's such a small section of the highway where they have done it - about 10 metres in length. Would have been more effective to apply to the whole of Sloane Square.

I share that concern. The way some people drive today, I'm not sure these measures would really slow them down; they would just act ever more aggressively to peds and other road users.

In essence these plans do appear to be safer, but my cynical mind wonders about the cabbies and 'out of town' drivers, such as coach drivers.

If they were to just pedestrianise the road it would make a nice walk from the museums right up to the Albert Hall.

Presumably all the people who complain about shared space and think it can never work have never used a supermarket carpark...
