Cubester's team, Huddersfield RUFC U15's played the final of the Yorkshire Cup yesterday. The final yesterday made a great end to a fitful season, as many of our players were often away on other duties, with district, County, School Rugby (some of our players reached the final of the Daily Mail cup, ) and injuries all taking their toll on the fixture list.

The cup is arranged with all eligible clubs playing the first round back in October, the winners of the first round going forward to the main Cup competition, and the losers going forward to the plate. Our team has reached the final at U12, Semis at U 13 and 14, so there was always a question of which was the team to beat: Otley, West Park Leeds, Middlesborough, Sheffield, York or Huddersfield.

We had played Otley in the Semis in 2011 and lost despite being a score up by half time. Last year we played West Park Leeds and lost very narrowly, and they went on to beat Otley in the final. This year we were as strong as we were ever likely to be, despite missing two crucial players to fractures picked up at county trials and the Daily Mail cup final, and we had three new signings, two soccer player converts and a League full-back/ stand-off playing Union for his first season.

Our route to the final was emphatic, with walkover wins in the first three rounds, HRUFC 40 Ripon 0, HRUFC 40 Malton and Norton 0, HRUFC 40 Old Brodleans 0, and to their credit Ilkley put up the stiffest opposition, putting the only try past us and potting two penalty goals for a 35-11 victory to Huddersfield in the semi-final.

We met the mighty Otley in the final, for many years a "bogey team"
The final score was an emphatic 15-0 to Huddersfield!

Well done to your lad's team!

Just think how much better they'll play when they get rid of the poncy coloured boots and hair gel!

(I'm an ex prop - not a pretty-boy back!).

Poncy boots indeed. ( The number 7 is wearing a pair of his cousin Phil Dowson's carbon bling boots in honour of the occasion) .
