Putting a cycle lane in any position on that road makes little sense. If they really wanted to slap down some paint at all costs, the least offensive provision would be intermittent white bicycle stencils in the middle of the lane.

With a parking area to the left of the main lane, there is no safe location on that road for an on road cycle facility.

Yep. Bung a cycle lane on whether its a good thing or not. Welcome to Cambridge.

Is it a cycle lane? Perhaps someone recognised the danger and painted a red exclusion area for cyclists to keep them out of the door zone.

It is an advisory cycle lane - you can see the bike marking in the picture. However, some lanes (but certainly the minority) do have buffer zones and then a cycle lane. This is better than what is on offer here, but not practical given the road width.

Well its got bikes painted in it.

I agree, it is a safety exclusion zone. The only thing that confuses me is that my local council uses green for such safety zones.
