Hi.
It's was a lethal combination today of hot weather, a good cycling buddy as in the ex brother-in-law, and a very steep climb with a pub at the top. The temptation was just to much and frankly it would of been rude to just pass it by. The Guinness in there was the best we've had ,and tasted more like the stuff you get back in its home town of Ireland.
If fact we had to have a couple more just to make sure ,and and that's when our cycle ride came to its end for the day. Luckily for us the 4 miles home were down quiet single track country lanes were traffic rarely travels ,but non the less it was an interesting experience riding home feeling half cut. Thankfully this only happens once in a blue moon when the temptation of liquid refreshments are needed.

I cycled home once after far too many. Using shared paths and giving due consideration to pedestrians. I worked out that a fair old pace would give me more stability , which was fine until trying to negotiate the ramp at the end of the subway, which meant a very unsuccessful attempt at a tight left turn.

Yes, but remember that you can still be done for cycling while under influence of drink or drugs. IIRC it's just that police have to use the pre-breathalyser tests. There's more commentary at http://www.bikehub.co.uk/featured-articles/cycling-and-the-law/

So, in short, stop before your control or balance is impaired too much for your route home. The old idea of 4(men)/3(women) units of alcohol remaining may be as good a general limit as we can estimate - basically a swift pint. Too many motorists pushed it too close to the limit, so now government just tells you not to drink anything - I guess if you're too poor to be chauffeured, government thinks you're too poor to drink in a pub. Are motorists driving around alone part of the reason why pubs are closing? Save your local pub - ride a bike! ;)

I thought I read somewhere that the "proper control" test had caused issues in the courts.

Pubs and cycling go together very well, I co-run a cycling group based at and backed by my local pub. The advantage is that when we return from our Sunday morning ride there is invariably a free beer in thanks for my efforts :okay:
