I had a mate who kept getting punctures on his new bike (about 30 years ago) after we had done 25 miles of a Doncaster to Bridlington ride. He then got another 100 yards on then another just as we'd repaired that. It turned out to be the rim tape was in upside down. It was hard plastic with a recess for the spokes and this was cutting the tube. We had to find a bike shop then buy a new tube and and rim tape, checking the other wheel to make sure that was alright.

I always carry at least 1 spare tube and glue-less patches.

Carry 2 tubes + patches , i found out to my horror that the glue does not like sub zero temperatures when i got a double flat one winters night....

I've taken to using 700c x25 Marathon plus during winter months - no punctures, did have a small split/cut in one so will fit new one next winter, and 700c x 23 Durano plus - very few punctures but collect cuts so new pair after each winter. Tyre weight isn't an issue when compared to the convenience of fixing a flat on a cold wet road side. Year round 11 mile each way shift worker.

My hybrid bike did well over 5,000 puncture free miles on the Marathon Plus tyres. When I bought my 1st road bike, I tried the Durano plus 23mm front and rear, but got a rear puncture within 200 miles! I put this down to the weight I carry (twin panniers and my 12 stone)

I now run an M+ on the rear, and a Durano up front. So I get a decent top speed and, after 2,000 miles still no punctures.

Another bleeding puncture last night. Had a spare tube this time and had the wheel off, tyre off, tube replaced, tyre back on, wheel back on in around 10 mins. Missed the train by 2 mins - bummer!!

I'm carrrying similar weights (both panniers and person) to you - so it looks like a switch to Marathon Plus's from the Boardman standard Michelins is imminent!!
