if your car is burning oil it will be black. oil should be brown. Is this the first time you've checked it? obviously, it goes without saying to check the oil when engine is cold to get the correct level.

if it's black, can you hear a tappety tap when the engine is running? if the tappets have gone then that can cause the oil to burn.

undo the water cap and check the water is not soup, and take off the oil cap off and check the oil is not soup (you would probably see if the oil is soup from the dip stick too). if either is soup, oil and water are mixing together and that's BAD. means the head gasket has gone and that's expensive. other than that, if there is no visible leak, i would fill it up to the max and then keep an eye on it over the next month. it could be it wasn't at a high enough level in the first place. only when you are sure there is a problem i would take it to purgeot.

Using oil in the first 5000 miles is nothing to worry about. Top it back up.

The car is almost brand new so there should be no question of it going wrong.

The new enging will have needed 5000 miles to bed in and now the oil is full of the minute bits of metal worn off in the bedding in process so it would be wise to change the oil.

As it is not clear what the oil level started at it is not anything to panic about that it uses some oil, that is quite normal in most cars.

One year of driving a car in town or on short runs of a couple of miles will take as much out of it as say 20,000 on the motorway on long runs.

Bottom line is the car is expensive and the service is relatively cheap so get it done. If not you will lose the value or more on its resale.

About the one thing I do on cars to maintain them is to keep it full of good oil. Engine will be trouble free if you do. Change the oil once a year regardless of miles.

All cars use oil. You don't have anything to worry about. Top it up and forget about it.

Modern manufacturing processes with improved tolerances and surface finishes do not create as much detritus to sully the oil nor do the engines need prolonged running in periods.

Having said that I had a brand new motor bike that consumed its own gearbox oil and seized within 150 miles. It was a 2 stroke so it was difficult to diagnose that the smoke screen that the bike was creating was not entirely from the two stroke oil.

If you feel ill at ease with your Peugeot car get it checked by the dealers. It shouldn't cost you much if there is a charge and it's better to rely upon the advice of the vendor's mechanics rather than folk who can't lift the bonnet and look for themselves before proffering advice.

My car has been inconsistent with oil since I bought it new. Most times it uses next to nothing between services but sometimes it needs a top up or two. After 8 years and 140,000 miles I still haven't figured out a reason. I carry a 2 1/2 litre can of diesel oil just in case.

Oil leaks are known common issues with many peugeots. That said it doesn't sound anything out of the ordinary.

I would say that if the car is used prodomenently for short trips, town driving it would be sensible to change the oil every six months rather than every year. Short trips knock the crap out of engines, nothing gets up to optimal operating temperature. Sounds mad but short-run cars need more attention than motorway munchers.
