I'm now sitting at home convalescing with a mug of tea after this mornings commute.

Riding my usual route- which is generally not too busy and as a rule used by considerate motorists - I got buzzed by a scooter just before a set of traffic lights, which were on red. My initial (and perhaps naive thought was that he had just misjudged things a bit. So when he stopped in the queue I passed him and said (in a calm and 'offering advice' kind of voice) 'Give me a bit more room next time, mate.'

I proceeded to the front of the traffic and set off when the lights turned green. Next thing I know I can hear the scooter behind me. At this point I guessed that the first buzz had not been an accident. Newxt thing I know I hear him laughing as he drew along side me, took his left hand off his handle bars and pushed me into the pavement. In a bid to steady myself I put my right arm out to steady myself (which almost had him off to be honest) but by then I was wobbling across the rode. I ended sprawled across the road, my new (to me, but really second hand) Assos gloves were shredded, the arm of my glasses snapped, chin grazed, road rash in all the usual places, bar tape ripped off, steering unit all skewed and severely dented pride.

At least the people behind me stopped, checked I was ok. I was very grateful but what is it about cyclists? I was lying on the road, victim of a potentially serious assault and people were crowding round offering help, first aid and lifts and all I could think was a) my bike, how's my bike? and  don't look after me get the number of the scrote who did this.

I've reported it to the police but I don't think it'll get far (no registration etc). Writing it all down here gets it off my chest.

BTW: cyclists in Cheltenham - beware the imbecile on a scooter (Hales Road, 0745).

That doesn't sound at all nice. I hope you're okay and chilled a little now.

None of the witnesses got the scooter's registration either then I take it? They'll be in the sh*t big time if plod tracks them down.

:biggrin::sad:

That's really nasty mate! I hope you recover soon.

Is the area likely to have any CCTV? Check it out, and quick. It may have caught the moped and his registration on camera. You have to do it quick because tape is sometimes overwritten.

I really hope the police take this seriously and catch this scumbag. I think though you might need to keep harassing the police to get them to do something...

Thanks for the kind words and sympathy guys, I knew I'd get some good words on here. I'll get onto the council/ police about the CCTV right away, I'd not thought of that. Seeing Magnatom's post made me think that perhaps I should be asking for a helmet cam for Xmas.

Feeling a bit more chilled now so I'm going to walk up to the bus and get myself into work - sitting here just makes me dwell on the issue which is not helping me!

Cheers again

Sorry to hear that.

Presumably as you have the rest of the day off, he'll be coming home along the same route later.......................

Electronic tea and sympathy to you. Keep on at plod and get a cam.

Console yourself that these things are usually a once-in-a-lifetime event, but get yourself a cam.

You raise an interesting possibility. Monnet, you could wait around at the lights for a bit tomorrow at the same time. I'm sure you'd recognise the scooter if you saw them again.

I really don't understand people sometimes. I've had a few 'incidents' of people shouting abuse and the like recently by to actually push you off. That's ridiculous! Hope you make a speedy recovery.

That's what I would do although he may change his route for a few days. My money would say that he will be there at the same time and place on Monday.

That's a terrible state of affairs.

hope you recover and catch the scrote.

I would say that 90% of people are commuting to work so there is a big chancve the scrote will be on the same route in the next week or so. It is just a matter of waiting.,

Did none of the drivers see what happened and get the reg?

The trouble with hanging out of the route is that even if you were sure that was him, you couldn't prove anything, and he of course would deny it.

You need to get plod to get the CCTV - now, before it's overwritten. Get onto them straightaway and get a commitment out of some identifiable/nameable individual to do it, or to say why they won't, given that this is at least as serious as GBH - you could have been killed.

If you don't get a firm commitment and an assurance of a proper follow up - ie, prosecution - make it clear that you will be contacting your MP. MPs don't like having their constituents assaulted. And plod don't like tangling with MPs. It's a lot of hassle at best, and it can lead to disciplinary action at worst.

This scumbag should be not just off the road but behind bars: make it your personal mission. Oh, and get well soon.
