question about cars with auto braking systems

Yeh! but. They still work better like. I am not sure the speed of cars on the roads has changed much, the volume of them has though, who else thinks parking spaces are getting smaller. Also aprt from myself who else keeps thier car in a garage at night.

not entirely sure brakes are that much better. My '68 Cortina without-servo could lock up the wheels with a good stomp on the pedals, as can my vastly superior modern Saab. (well 15 year old). I suspect the grip / braking force is the same. OK the saab brakes would take a lot longer to overhead & fade if I drove around like a loon, and I don't need to press nearly as hard, but in actual slowing downess - not sure there's much in it. The saab doe have anti-lock but I could and did cadence brake on the Cortina. An old drum braked morris might be different story - dunno.

Road holding is in a different league though - but again I could drive the old ford to its limits in reasonable safety, but is that safer than driving far faster in the Saab albeit within the car's limits - but maybe beyond the driver's

My Wife's Pious has auto parking. Even though she's disabled she doesn't need or use it. I guess if peoples skills are that poor they maybe shouldn't be driving at all.

Having worked on both the Cortina and the Saab I can assure you that your memory may be playing tricks with you.

All cars should have this as standard to stop the nobs behind tailgating. In fact, shouldn't just restrict this to cars. White band, tipper trucks, everything.

Except those pesky cyclists of course.

I've never felt that heavy braking someone mentioned above but I set the cruise quite far which keeps allowing clowns to go from the next lane into my lane.

Edit: ps someone mentioned parking cameras. I like them but given a choice if beepers OR camera, I'd take the beepers every time.

I am sure that around this area the driving instructors teach tailgating, in fact it might even be part of the driving test. Having driven all over the UK I honestly feel that Lincolnshire has about the lowest standard of driving, and that auto braking could be a huge help.

As far as i know its a distance thing..ie if the sensor picks up an object that the car is closing on too fast it just applies the brakes

Do the top-end auto-braking systems also slap the driver and give him/her a sound reprimand?

I've never driven a car with any kind of auto-braking and don't even like using cruise control. Having said that if I were in a car with my family I would be happier if all 40 tonne trucks had something like this fitted.

back to the OP's point - will it stop for a cyclist or pedestrian - and if not, the I'd suggest it would increase the risk.to the vulnerable as drivers will pay less attention because the trickery will mostly sort hings out

The system on cars is specifically designed to apply the brakes heavily to discourage drivers relying on it rather than paying attention.
