I have a feeling that I read somewhere that when you sell a car that the VED no longer goes with the car, is this right or was I imagining things. I looked on the government website but couldn't see anything helpful.

We are swapping the Saab we bought the other month for a different Saab as it suits our needs better. Both have VED on (our old one until feb 2015, the newer one until Dec 2014) and I am wondering if we can just leave it as is or do we have to cash in the old VED and then get new VED for the new vehicle. Both cars were VED'd before the October changes.

Sorry to be clueless but I've got a bit confused about it all.

yep that is correct. VED is now car and owner specific.
You will need to get new VED for the new vehicle and then claim a refund on the old one.

i believe the tax as some call it or the VED or is now un-transferable
i believe it is regardless of when it was taxed or when it runs out

not heard about cashing in your old one, assuming you are on about getting some money for surrendering it

Thank you.
I am pretty sure that you get refunded on the unused portion. I was reading something while in the docs so not paying the article all the attention that I could have.
@SatNavSaysStraightOn thanks for the link.

You only get refunded complete unused months. You will have to pay VED immediately on your new car including a full October's worth.

Other change, you can now pay by monthly direct debit.

Might have a chat with Tom then and see if we can do the deed at the end of the month. However the original Saab was 260 a year, the new (bigger, newer and diesel) Saab is a mere 140 so more than a little chuffed about that.

"Vehicle tax refunds
You no longer need to make a separate application for a refund of vehicle tax. DVLA will automatically issue a refund when a notification is received from the person named on DVLA vehicle register that:
  • the vehicle has been sold or transferred
  • the vehicle has been scrapped at an Automated Treatment Facility
  • the vehicle has been exported
  • the vehicle has been stolen
  • the vehicle has been removed from the road and the person on the vehicle register has made a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN)
  • the person on the vehicle register has changed the tax class on the vehicle to an exempt duty tax class"

Thank you. I went on one of their websites but I couldn't find this info, all I could find was stuff about how to renew, get a driving licence, sorn a vehicle etc.
That would be the right way to do things though. Can't have that.

How many miles will you have to drive to before the Government gets its £260 back from the tax revenues from the poor fuel economy of the Landrover?

Can't help feeling smug about the delusional 'tax evaders'.
