are any of you going to the World Cup???

I know all the usual "I hate football clowns" will reply but for those weird people who actually like football. Who's going?

The reason I ask is a wee cockney sparra mate of mine I was talking to earlier is excited about it already and has been to every world cup and euros for the past 20 years.

You must be joking. Me and my son droppped into the local travel agent last w/e, and was quoted £2999 for one ticket to see England v Slovenia, flights and 6 nights in Jo'berg. P1ss takers or what?! USA was sold out and a grand or so dearer.

One of my colleagues is going. He has been to every qualifying match and has 'invested' heavily in his hobby. He tells me that he is committed to £3000 and does not yet have a ticket for a game in SA yet. Apparently, the FA lottery for tickets is a bit of a nightmare.

One of my friends husbands are going - in two shifts - five games so far(just a variety of countries) in the first two weeks, then back home.
Then he flies out for the final. One of his friends has contacts in high places.

My Brother-in-law is a copper in Joburg and he is not looking forward to it! All the petty theives, car jackers and prozzies are though!

We were actually planning a trip back to SA for it but the new baby will be a month old so we shall be watching from our lounge in the UK.

Oh no - not those idiots with the little In-Ger-Land flags fixed to their cars. again.

I predict - (assuming England have qualified -which shows my depth on the subject)
We will play crap in the group stages but scrape through to the next round.
We will then play some country you never knew played football and win - The flags will then go on all the cars and Frank Skinner will be wheeled out.
We will then get knocked out by a country we dont like in a controversial way with them either cheating or the ref not seeing something that the other 20 million fans saw.
The whole thing will become a farce with the final stages being settled by penalty shoot outs while we decide we would have beaten them 2-0 if we had got through.
All the programmes I watch will be moved or cancelled for a month.

However get the people who organise beach vollyball in on the planning and you are onto a winner...

Most of the serious contributors to the thread who know someone going appear to be from north of the border. Why's that then?

Probably through blind loyalty(stupidity) they'd somehow expected their /our team(Scotland) to qualify and had already booked the holidays.

I know that's the case with my friends husband - and his three mates he's going with. They alway's go to the World Cups and European Championships to watch the football, whether Scotland's there or not(recently not).

I'm not going, but how I wish I were! Looking forward to watching in the pub though  I'm off to the Rugby world cup in 2011 though, which will be better IMO!

I love both Football and Rugby, but to be honest I think I'd prefer to go to the Rugby World Cup. ;)
I think the over commercialisation of the Football World Cup is taking the edge of it for the travelling fans(prices of matches/accomodation/travel etc, etc).
From a purely personal point of view, I don't think South Africa's ready to hold a Football World Cup just yet. I really hope they prove me wrong?

Yup, I agree on that! However I believe South Africa will do a great job at hosting, they are a well develoed nation whome have devoted great time and effort into ensuring it's a success. As for the tragicshoiting incident mentioned in an earlier post, South Africa is a more develoed country and therefor can't be compared!

Like I said - I hope I'm wrong.

My mum has a few friends over there(SA) and they have concerns for travelling fans safety(and their own).
I know SA will try to put on a good show. I feel in 8/12 years would have been better for them - I didn't see the need to rush them into spending billions on this(FWC), when money could've been spent elsewhere.

Didn't hear about a shooting incident - what / where?
