I'm assuming that if a referee makes a mistake and doesn't spot that the ball hasn't actually crossed the line, but is deceived into thinking that it has, doesn't count?

Of course the opposition would take it in good grace, and not question the referees decision that is unmistakeably final and cannot be questioned without incurring further penalty. However that doesn't stop someone yelling that the ball wasn't over the line in some random at the opposition, but in the referees hearing, and the captain asking for clarification as to if the ball needs to be grounded over the line for a try to be awarded. Ahh, the good manners of the average rugby player - exemplary!!

Refs never make mistakes do they?! Mind you having watched England for years our players never either!

Is there a situation where a defending player can concede a try by some infringement, without an opponent having touched the ball? E.g. he runs into his own in-goal and then commits a forward pass or whatever?

Sorry, don't really know the laws (used to play it as a kid, at school, but that's it).

I already knew that you don't concede an 'own try' by touching down the ball yourself in-goal (BTDT) .

*Assuming it was kicked from the field of play* If it goes dead - scrum 5 attacking ball - if it doesn't play on whether it goes through the posts of not it doesn't matter. No 'own dropped goals' either
