The Skipton sprint triathlon is at the start of April and the swim is only 400m in a pool. At the end of the season the Haworth mudman duathlon is a very good hilly race if you own a mtb or a cyclocross bike even. My mtb is ten years old and cost £100 new but I did a reccy of the bike route last year (late 2009) on it but was ill the weekend of the race and had to pull out. Sadly it was cancelled in 2010. I'll be entering it this year.

Duathlon may be good for giving you a taste of competitive riding, as mentioned is not draft legal, so effectively a time trial. You'll probably gain some small handling/cornering skills. Just don't confuse a bike leg of a duathlon or time trial with a proper bike race - different world with close riding and big changes of pace involved.
