Racing Licence Points

Hello all,

I've recently started having a go at some crit races, just about holding my own, performed reasonably ok in a couple and just missed the top 10.

I'm a bit confused how the points system works, in terms of moving up categories.
I know the basics, that if you get 12x points you move up to 3rd cat, but does this happen immediately, or at the end of the season?
Looking at start lists for some races, it seems that some riders who've placed well in lots of races still enter 4th cats (??)

I think once you get your points you go to the next category straight away. You used have to send your licence in to get it up graded. I think that if you go up from 4th to 3rd for example you can still ride any 4th cat races you have entered but if you place you don’t get any points or prizes.
