Unless you're riding in adverse conditions or succumbing to tunnel vision, I can't see a problem with a bit of casual racing. It is possible to go faster without going too fast.

Passed a guy on Tuesday morning riding a fold-up bike. Must have taken offence that he was overtaken by a beat up mtb with two buckled wheels & 3 gears. He overtook me with 10m from a red light mounted the pavement & bolted round the corner. I would have chased him down but was going in the wrong direction

Funny that we have never had the pleasure of attending a forum ride with any of those that "scalp" other people [and we have done quite a lot of CC forum rides] nor have we actually met any at races with a number on their backs.
It always without fail gives me a chuckle at how quick some cyclists are on a keyboard.

its all about targets , I aim for landmarks , keeping a certain speed when climbing , if you have another cyclist in the distance go for it push yourself to level with him.
The term racing is wrong its about pushing you own limits for self development .

i overtook and older man on a heavyish hybrid yesterday (similarish to mine) that was whilst racing along one of my favourite strava segments whilst clad in lycra and then kept on looking down at my flashy garmin and decided i had lost it on trying to beat that segment and slowed down but still trying to keep the distance between other rider but for some reason that gap never opened very much!
i did once beat a middle aged lady and here son out for a leisurely ride whilst i was clad in lycra and with a flashy garmin! i still felt smug
Cheers Ed

I saw a carbon warrior once, saw the proverbial target on his back and the competitive streak in me went for it :P
I got past and felt great like I owned the road. All those hours of pedaling actually made me stronger etc etc then in heart beat he was past and up the road. I felt like a right tit.
Now I think very carefully about passing them. Chase them down, yes, passing them, looong think first :P

Speaking personally this thread is depressing, it only serves to highlight the diminishing art of communication and respect,.the thought of catching and passing another cyclist without at the very least saying hello is rude and ignorant.
Some people need to prove something, others do not, we prefer the company of the latter.

Huh, I never pass a cyclist without saying hi chap! regardless of direction. It's a matter of honor. Same as motorcyclist tipping the head on a pass.
That said, I've said Hi to some and just got a grumpy look back :/
