I mostly like silence. For specific programmes, Radios 3, 4, and 6. That's about it really.

Scala here, Charles Nove I find very easy on the ear first thing in the morning, always enjoyed Simon Mayo as a broadcaster wherever he works, even now in his spare bedroom.

I was also going to suggest FIP, but @the_mikey got in first....

it all depends what you’re looking for. If you’re interested in formulaic pop/rock/80s/whatever, there’s a huge number of stations, all with pretty much the same playlists.

If you’re into specialist music - whatever the genre - there’s bound to be something for you. Just need to know what :-)

I like Radio 4, Radio 5 Live and Radio 6, but I wanted to see if there are any other worthwhile radio stations out there. I like blue grass and music from 1977-79.

Radio X is amazing. Chris Moyles & Johnny Vaughn. Great indie music. Kind of like my youth re-invented.

It's a bit more complicated than that...

I was going to suggest 1980 FM, but it's a bit modern for your tastes.

Couple of oldie ones are commercial free; Solid Gold Gem AM which is primarily 60s-80s plus "New Gold"
Serenade Radio which plays anything "Easy listening" since the 1930s and I have seen described as sounding like Radio 2 use to.
It may have been you who recommended Solid Gold Gem AM previously. If so, thanks. Some of the presenters are a bit corny but I like the music & lack of ads.

recommended Solid Gold Gem AM previously

Their country music man, Brian Clough, worked as a photographer for The Northern Echo for 30 or 40 years.

He was always well into country music, broadcasting in the early days of the internet.

Something of a legend in his own lunchtime, but I expect he knows his subject.

FIP radio, from France, eclectic music radio, not easy listening but great entertainment when fettling a bicycle

There was a guy in Brighton who relayed FIP for many years on FM from a transmitter in his loft. It drew quite a following in the town and became very popular. I guess it was assumed it was coming from just over the water and the authorities paid it no attention, although it did get raided eventually by Ofcon sadly. More here.

Many are veterans of radio broadcasting in the UK, same with their sister station Seranade and although self funded by the presenters, donations welcomed, the output has a professional touch many internet stations struggle to achieve
