I don't know how many of you have connections in the forces, but those of you who do may be able to get hold of a set of pilots gloves.
I think these are the best cycling gloves I have ever had, and by a long way. I can tie my shoe laces and easily use my phone with them on as they are so thin, but they are surprisingly tough. They are also in a gauntlet style and so cover the ends of your sleeves.
I have two sets; a white pair and a black pair. The black ones occasionally come up in army surplus shops, but the best kind are the white ones as they seem to be made from thicker leather, and the white colour also helps with visibility when giving hand signals.
Anyone else use them?

Not sure about white ones but I can point you in the right direction - google 'nomex gloves' - I use them when playing airsoft; tough, warm and allowed me to reach the trigger

They are now being used for cycling in these winter months<br>Hurrah, first post!

I used to get hand down aircrew gloves from my father - absolutely right - they are without doubt superb - white for the spring and autumn and the olive waterproof ones for bad weather - I have never seen them sold in surplus stores

You have the olive ones! Not fair, I want some. The other thing I want is the green silk liner that goes with the pilots gloves for cold weather flying, but again not able to source any yet.
As for nomex gloves for cycling? I can't see any advantge of nomex over leather, apart from fire resistance, and surely they get soggy.
Apparently the black pilots gloves used to be used by SFs, and maybe still are.
I note that several pair are on ebay at the moment.
