Not quite ... all of the members of Rage, and particularly de la Rocha, the singer, were politically active, and made themselves quite unpopular in some circles by being so.
Link.

Indeed. The band were politically aware rather than an angst ridden wet metal act. Whether you agree with their political views or not they were aware of a lot of what was going on while the mass media and tabloids report on stuff like the X factor  (because people want to read about iX factor and the media is a business likeany other)

I've bought rage against the machine but at the end of the day the only reason X factor is so popular on the TV is because there is the audience/market for it. No one is forced to watch the X factor. Saturday evenings have plenty of other entertainment options.

Aren't we missing the point here?
To hype RATM to number one is playing Cowell's game. RATM will have less claim to be at #1 on merit than the Joe boy. It won't stop Cowell making a fortune, people will buy Joe regardless of RATM and some equally out of spite.
It's a nonsense.

The only people gaining from this are Sony.

They are both on Sony record labels it is a win win for Sony. Not the best loved record label in the world. Some pretty famous performers have openly had issues with them.

Watch the youtube clip for an interview with the band for their answer to questions with a similar point to your post!

Updated info from inside the musicbiz

More than 80,000 CD sales yesterday were not enough to allow Joe McElderry’s The Climb to overtake Rage Against The Machine’s Killing In the Name at the top of the midweek singles charts.

However, the physical release of the single from the X Factor winner did allow it to cut the LA band’s lead at the top of the midweeks to just under 37,000 copies today from around 65,000 yesterday.

Killing In The Name has sold around 253,000 copies so far this week, all of them digital. The majority of The Climb’s sales are still digital but this may change with the CD single now widely available.

Many retailers who do not traditionally stock CD singles – including Asda and Tesco – are stocking The Climb on CD.

The two singles are leading one of the closest races in years for the Christmas number one single. A number of bookmakers have now installed Rage Against The Machine as the favourite to top the festive charts.

I would rather Cliff Richard made it. RATM - weren't they the ones that wined about their mum';s asking them to tidy their rooms or whatever?
No, that was the Beastie Boys "Fight for your right to party". Some years earlier, too

Last years X factor winner sold just over 1 million copies in 3 weeks. So, 19 of the 20 million viewers didn't bother buying the single.

I hope RATM get the No. 1 slot just to give hope to other bands next year. I bought a copy as 29p to see Simon Cowell getting angry is the best 29p I've spent all year!

If nothing else it will introduce a new generation to RATM. This has got to be a good thing!

a tip-top young person's popular beat combo if ever there was one.

Now, let me work this one out. Sony appeal to people to buy sufficient numbers of a record to prevent another Sony record making it to number 1. Wouldn't have been simpler to stop selling the X factor single?

And I think the chances of Simon Cowell being angered by 29p are on the slim side of zero

Haha it's not about the individual purchase, it's the whole movement which will annoy him. Each purchase will help to prevent the drivel that is the x factor track (a miley cyrus cover for gods sake!) making it to christmas number 1, which is the whole aim of the show if you think about it.

As for thinking Rage are rubbish, of course not everyone is going to like them, it's the same for everything and everybody, get over it.

RATM didn't do too well on 5Live this morning.
It was amazing! The bloke presenting seemed to love it, it was just the woman who was shocked! They must have realised what was going to happen!

What they had to say made a lot of sense though.

Very true, not everyone's tastes are the same and I wasn't dissing yours, just saying even though it's a worthy cause I don't think I can buy it because I don't like it. There you go, over it.
