It depends. *
But, if you are replacing the chain because it has elongated by 0.5%, you are replacing it too early. With a half-link chain it can grow to twice the full-link chain spec without doing damage.

* I can't give a definitive answer because I don't know what the drop-out looks like, whether the original chain was correct, whether it has a derailer, etc etc.
