When I had the recent Retul fit, the guy originally said he might have had me on a 56cm frame. After doing the fit and making the adjustments, he was happy that the 54cm was the right size with the 100mm stem flipped and 38cm bars. I am just under 5'10 but 34" inside leg

I like/need an upright position so all should be good once I am over my current injuries/ails
Wow vickster, you are very long legged & short torso in build, I am opposite but to a lesser degree.

It's all quite interesting the whole fit thing as there are so many permutations to consider.

How did you find your Retul fit ?
Worth the money ? Did you learn much from it that you can take away to use again ?

Interested.

You guys all ride bikes way too big for you IMO.

I'm 5"9 and a 54 is near crippling even with an 80 stem. Can't get bar to seat drop and the reach is just too long.
Interesting Jason, not in an off hand way & not dismissing your view at all.

The OP is 3" taller than yourself which I think is not a negligible amount & so with this in mind I do think he would be better off with a real world 56 > 58 size frame.

When I say real world, what I am trying to clarify is, opposed to the quite extreme differences in which some brands decipher their frame sizes.

Last night I double checked the geometry of my Sintesi, frame size Large & found it to be 55.5cm effective top tube, less than the 56cm I thought it was.

I was recommended a size 60 for a Cube by shop guy but found this too stretched but a 58 perfect.

Now, taking your original point Jason, it has been noticed that many World Tour Pro road cyclists are riding frames 1 or sometimes 2 sizes down from what would normally be considered standard for their height etc & they often ride 150 > 220km in a stage without discomfort.

All of this is probably why we should all try before we buy.

Having said that, I took an estimated gamble on my Sintesi as the price was just too damn good & it worked out great.

Took it for a test ride, loved it, picking it up on pay day

Good that you hit it off with your mates bike. Seems a good deal & a good bike too.

I am surprised it fit you but it shows what i know, (Plonker) me not you.

Did you have to put the post down in the frame to get comfy (the seatpost looks quite low) ?

I know that some prefer it this way anyway, it looks a little low set to me.

You've got a bargain there, enjoy your new ride.

The photo here is the one he had on a certain auction site after he rode it. When i sat on it, i had the seat up a couple of inches compared to how it looks in that picture. Had about an inch and a bit of "bar to crotch" when standing flat footed astride the bike and leg was fully extended when heel on the pedal. Reach seemed good in the few minutes that i rode it up and down the road, felt very relaxed holding the top of the bars in the same way i hold the extensions on the hybrid. Had a go on the drops, but as im not used to that, it seemed a bit weird, but I suppose i'll get used to it and may have to make some small adjustments over time.

Gotta buy my own pedals for it (doesnt come with), so im looking at maybe trying some clipless; just some cheapish ones from wiggle to start with. All in all, i cant wait to ride it, just gotta wait till pay day till i can pay him in full and get the pedals.

just to add to this - i have a Raleigh sp comp 2011 - i love it and recently made a few upgrades that have made it feel even lighter and accelerate faster. Its a 56cm frame and im 5'10" and 32" leg and i feel comfortable on it even after long sportives(once i changed the seat to something with a bit more flex)
I keep looking at the new Raleigh range and even 2012 sp teams but the Comp feels special enough for me and looks a bit different to the dull Treks and Giants everywhere.

Just as an update, im loving this bike. I do think that a 56 might have been slightly better for me, but i wouldn't say that i feel uncomfortable on it. (and i've done 80 mile rides on it). Tempted to flip the stem or maybe get a shorter one just so that I have the option of a slightly more upright position.

Flipped the stem and rotated the bars a little tonight. The position is way more relaxed. Its amazing how much difference shifting the bars up by what must be just 2 inches at most makes to the whole feel of the bike. Going to test it out tomorrow on the commute home.

just seen this post and would like to add, as I have the SP Comp 2012, 54"
I'm 5'10", 32" inside leg
I found the 56" too big and changed it for the 54", and changed the stem from 10cm to 8cm
The ride is great, looks great, but can't compare it to any other road bike as this is my first
