Spare cables is a good shout, I know I took some. As I recall, I also loaded up a saddlebag with a Brooks saddle (indispensable, for me!), a pair of SPD pedals, an Allen key set, a spoke key, a chain tool and spare tubes and a pump. I also took a small can of WD-40 to fix the brifters, although this is not relevant to you. Oh, and tyre levers and chain lube. This was enough for most eventualities, but I was caught out by the knackered bottom bracket, which was fixed for me by a local bike shop. The only other thing I couldn't sort was a stuck stem, which meant I was in an arse in the air time trial position for the whole ride.
It's a cool thing to do, and a great way to have a mini adventure and ride some new routes!
