I've done the equivalent in mathematical modelling.

As an undergraduate I used the Monte Carlo method to deduce the value of Pi in computational mathematics as a primer to deducing the emissivity of a black body. I even wrote a program in BASIC to do the donkey work on a computer that was the size of a double wardrobe most of the space was taken up with magnetic core memory banks. It took ages to execute and the result was as expected and totally underwhelming.

I hadn't heard of the Monte Carlo method until yesterday, when I was reading an article at work about mathematical modelling of slope stability (land slides and so on). And then here it is again. There's dark forces at work I tell you.

Widely used. There was even a poster on here once that used to do them for their day job and was talking about something else and then didn't realise that monte carlo methods were very famously used for what he was trying to talk about!
