Whatever happened to Stenhousemuir and Hamilton Academicals. (and Andy Stewart come to that..) Such lovely names which made the game of Scottish Football results? Alloa - vaguely Polynesian, Queen of the South (3BM) Forfar 5 Fife 4...all that stuff of memory and a Saturday evening in front of the coal fire before my Dad 'invited' me to get to the station and pick up a copy of the Evening News - so that the sacred Vernons Pools (no, not him) coupon could be placed alongside the results checklist...and...There, my Dad's dream ended until the following Thursday night, when his pools coupon was collected again.
Hmmm, you've obviously never been to Alloa...
...and FWIW it's Hamilton Academical, not Academicals - just in case it ever gets asked in your local pub quiz

That's the tax side. Where they cheated was by not declaring the side-payments they made to players to the SFA.
There was also the frankly ridiculous conclusion reached that giving people hundreds of thousands of pounds on top of their salary with no requirement to pay it back could count as a "loan".

Marmion said illegal , the not declaring side payments was a breach of rules , not illegal as such and we know the governing body knew about them as they were all in the RFC accounts and a matter of public record , I personally think they were wrong to use them but the crux of the EBT payments not being declared as pay to the governing body was if they included them as PAY to players then that would of made them illegal with the tax man.
The end result was a ruling by the governing body saying Rangers did not cheat or gain a sporting advantage by not declaring the payments but were fined £250,000 for non discloser which the new company agreeing to pay oldco debts agreed to pay.

Which, putting all team loyalties to one side for a moment, was a heap of steaming turds.
Team A used a complex tax dodge which meant they only paid players £1,000,000 a year inc tax instead of the usual £1.2m (for example). This saving enabled them to hire a better calibre of player than they could otherwise afford. Of course it gave them a sporting advantage. Do you think Artur Numan, Frank De Boer and Gascoigne came to Glasgow for the joys of playing at Hamilton?
And it's disingenuous to say the SFA knew about them because they were in the accounts. What was disclosed was "Salaries - £14 squillion", with no breakdown saying who got paid what.
What we've seen with the whole Rangers affair is how lawyers and accountants can twist things around until up is down and black is white. And the whole thing continues with a bunch of gangsters and shysters robbing Rangers supporters blind and getting away with it.

Jaws ( Jordan ) had been shouting obscenities during the game which Gattuso being fluent in Scots obscenities because of his time with Rangers and being married to Scot heard and confronted him , hence the handbags .

The reason it was not a sporting advantage is because the EBTs were not illegal and open for use for all the other teams , if the ruling had went the other way then yes it would be an unfair advantage .
Personally I think HMRC were correct in questioning this through the courts but the time that they took was wrong , if the process had been carried out quicker then if they had of won they might of got paid more than what they would get now which would be pennies in the pound and if they had lost like they have then Rangers would not have been sold to Craig Whyte.
It is obvious that HMRC were sending out a message to other companies about using these type of schemes , pay up or spend the next ten years fighting through the courts,I believe they are appealing to the High Court on a point of law at the moment .
