Now this may sound completly stupoid but if one wants a higher riding position by adding spacers to your headset section how far is that bolt capable of functioning safely? I read somewhere one needs to leave a minimum 3mm for the head cap to be placed but can the bolt be a bigger one without compromising safety?

There should be sufficient length on the cap bolt to cope.

I was not going to be raising it massively but as a beginner a more upright position feels slightly more comfortable I suppose coming form a MTB background

You can't add more spacers than you currently have. If there are any above the stem, you can move them to underneath and thus raise the bars. Also might be able to flip the stem, so the stem points more upwards.

Other options are as mentioned earlier, a stem with a larger angle or by using an adjustable stem so that you can experiment with height.
Good luck

Another option is to replace the stem with a hi rise or adjustable one .

Thorn specialise in high stems, and there are no problems apparent on the forums
