I agree re others about low usage on diesels so unless you are going to do a few miles in the future avoid it like the plague.

Try going for something a bit more classic like this

Definitely. The short trips is probably what kills a lot of modern diesels - people don't realise about the emission systems and how the engines need to be at full temperature to do it's stuff. I even used to hate 'shuffling' our petrol cars on/off the drive, so the van goes in 'first' and generally sits there all week. We use it for longer journeys.

The SCR (ad-blue) is a bit of a ticking time bomb, which is why I use Wynns additive to stop crystallisation of the ruddy stuff.

Doing short journeys isn't really a problem, so long as you also do fairly frequent longer ones.

I will quite often drive the 2-3 miles to Cowbridge or Pontyclun and back, but I also do a 40 mile drive to Swansea and back almost every week, half of which is motorway, and a reasonable number of other longer journeys, and I've never had an issue with the DPF.

Though having said that mine is (just!) prior to AdBlue, being a 2015 model, so I don't know how much that would affect it if it were needed.

For your type of use Accy, there are three things you should be looking at -

Small
Japanese
Petrol

...or electric. Any number of Leafs and Zoes for very sensible spend that would lap that use up, without the unreliability that can accompany older ICEs. Yes Accy doesn't have home charge facility, but he has public chargers nearby and when I last did the math, the cost to fuel was about the same as petrol. Much cheaper servicing too.

Bit of an issue as Accy doesn't have parking next to his flat, and most Zoe's are battery rental still, so won't save a huge amount. Nice cars though.

I thought I covered that off when I said:

'Yes Accy doesn't have home charge facility, but he has public chargers nearby and when I last did the math, the cost to fuel was about the same as petrol.'

It's not about saving (save servicing) - it's about the same cost, like what I done said, but as a fuel for a low mileage 'round the houses' type driver it's a very viable choice. Owned battery Zoes start at 3.5-4k or so, for 2016 onward models, incidentally.

Won't happen, of course, because Accy will listen to any possible downside much more acutely than anything about an upside.

Are you implying our Accy is a ditherer?:ohmy::ohmy:

I've just spotted your message 'biggsy' so I apologise for the reply delay!😉 Yes, I like the quirkiness of that car! However Leicester is a long way off and due to the low price there's no way they'd drive it up here to me, even if I offered to pay for it first!

I was just using that as an example as like you say Leicester is a fair ol' distance.

He doesn't cycle anymore !

I'm going riggggggghhhht of him in that case.... Still you need to consider it, you never know when you might come to your senses and start cycling again.... I find motoring bills and needing to visit filling stations are a key motivator!

In all seriousness. Mrs B has had Honda Jazzes for years.

Can't wack 'em really. If im going to town, I prefer it.

The only down side is they suffer with rear callipers, but that is sorted by stripping and servicing annually.

Yes I know I said earlier in another motoring thread that with my monocular vision I'm better off with small cars, but look at this!😎

It's in my price range and it's only about 2.5 miles from where I live. I might go and have a look at it tomorrow and ask if they'd take my Fiat 500 in part exchange.😉
