... it must have been a proof-reader's worst nightmare!
... or the easiest gig he ever had.

"That spelling is wrong!"
"No it isn't, it's meant to be like that!"
"Oh. Well, that spelling is wrong!"
"No it isn't, it's meant to be like that!"
etc :giggle:

Macleod may be writing in a field dominated by US writers, but he himself is - as far as I know - Scottish. Just like Iain Banks ...

Err, I know. That's one of the reasons I write 'US-dominated' and not 'US'. He's also someone I'm pleased to know... ^_^

(You might also check out Charlie Stross, but his stuff often tends more towards the silly than the grandiose)

He can be silly, but he can also produce some rather good ideas. But I'm not sure he always knows the difference. My favourite things of his are the two near future cybercrime novels he's written, Halting State and Rule 34. I also liked his short-story collection, Wireless, which has weeded out a lot of the crap.

I've now read the first two of the Dan Simmons Hyperion series and must confess than for the first book and a half I wasn't convinced. The POW and it all kicked off and I've enjoyed everything from that point onwards.

But... I am rather excited that there's a new Iain M Banks Culture novel out!

That's not where my surname comes from BTW.

Leed Child's books, the Jack Reacher series. If, like me, you're partial to a bit of extreme violence, bad guys getting their cumuppence, and gratuitous sex then Lee Child is the author for you.

Second that. Lee Child has created a great character in Reacher.
I also enjoyed David Feintuchs' Seafort books - seven of them.

Have now also read the entire Hyperion Cantos (Dan Simmons) and the Mote series (Larry Niven).

Where to next? I've got a feeling this has been covered in another thread but I can't find it!

I've also read a lot of Dan Simmons stuff after following this thread, also his Ilium/Olympus duo.

At the moment, inbetween cycling books and whatnot, I'm working my way through Neal Stephenson, having read Snowcrash many many years ago when it was new, I've got through Diamond Age and am now onto the 'not strictly science fiction but written for fans of that genre' material. Finishes Cryptonomicon and have the Baroque cycle loaded onto the e-reader on the iphone.
