I appreciate that educational standards have plummeted over the past four decades or so but why is it that some people 'read' what they want to see rather than what is actually written .Grrrrr

I blame the school diners, they never put plums in the custard any more, which may or may not be two words.

Anyway, what's it got to do with you? ;0)

because it's what they do innit?

Seriously, we all do it to greater or lesser degrees. Language is not an exact science and we all 'read in' things that the writer (or speaker) did not intend. Our comprehension is based on our own understanding and experiences, not other peoples.

Next time you're sat in a cafe (or some such place), just earwig someone's conversation and listen to its ebbs and flows. Sometimes you'd swear the people are not actually talking to each other, or certainly not listening!

oh nothing of consequence really.

Its just people seem to 'read' things into what they read about their pet subjects which triggers a knee-jerk reaction and they go spouting off about something which is completely unwarranted .

For example if I write or read 'it is likely' I understand that to mean that in all likelihood there is a high probability . What I don't mean is that it will be the case in every instance .

god I'm turning into a pedant. no wait I am one already.

thats an interesting premise . Whilst i'm sure you are probably right in most cases, I'm not sure that it should be so.

The more we abuse and misuse the English language the more useless it becomes. If we accepted that near enough is good enough in any other field like science and technology for instance then everything would start failing in pretty short order.

I accept that modern languages are evolving at an ever increasing pace but is it necessarily a good thing to allow or passively encourage it by lack of action?

Soon we won't be able to communicate with one another except by body language.

'I'll have fourcandles'etc
