A lot of these have popped up in Reading. They are all shaft driven. I have seen numerous stations around town, but I wonder what the take up of the scheme will be. I'd have thought most cyclists have their own bikes, and that most non-cyclists won't be tempted. If I wanted to use one instead of my own hack, I would have to walk 5 to 10 minutes to hire one, then another 5 to 10 minutes the other end. One thing that might have made them more appealing is some electric assist. There are one or two hills in Reading.

You are not the target market any more than I am the target market for Boris Bikes. Bike hire schemes are not aimed at existing UK cyclists but at pedestrians. and Teh Forenz who think cycling is normal.
Not necessarily. I'm a cyclist. If I catch the train to London I'll hire a Boris bike when I get there. If I'm travelling to somewhere else where I'll need a bike I'll hire one from the Brompton Dock at Temple Meads.
Collateral usage. Not the target audience, though I commend your ingenuity on the hiring thing.
