[Edit: how do you justify "Eggs chopped up in a cup" then ...staple food of 2 to 5 year olds in our house... bit of cholesterol never did me any harm!! *waits for abuse*]

Eggs have been officially rehabilitated.

It's been recognised that eating [the protein] cholesterol doesn't affect the amount of [human] cholesterol in the blood.

The original research showing this was IIRC published in the 1970s, but it wasn't PC so had to be repeated more than the usual just replicated before it was accepted as official advice.

I can't remember where I heard it reported, but was given the official version by my cardiac rehab nurse. Basically don't worry about cholesterol in foods, worry about how foods cause you to make the stuff in your body.

This is an american website with the information in a nice clear form(section3)

http://www.aeb.org/LearnMore/EggsGoodHealth.htm#gh3

This is our government's version. It's all there but a bit muddled.

http://www.eatwell.gov.uk/asksam/healthydiet/eggsandpulsesq/

In all the advice I've had since the heart attack last year the most consistent bit has been avoiding saturated fat, and the reason given is that it encourages production of 'bad' cholesterol by the body.

When I first met the barrage of advice prawns, shellfish, liver, eggs and a good few other cholesterol containing foods were discouraged. All seem to have now been forgiven and put back on the menu.

The other advice, given by a cardiologist, is more difficult to follow - chose different parents next time!

Mayonnaise?
I think it's slowly coming out of the closet. For years us walking Cholesterol factories were told not to eat any high Cholesterol foods, more recently it's been found that such dietary modification made little impact on blood levels. Then they figured out the whole HDL/LDL thing and that did seem to have an impact (along with smoking, excercise, blood-pressure, drinking, stress etc). Some of us will produce shedloads of Cholesterol regardless of what we ingest, but it's how the body deals with and transports the stuff that affects whether we get furred-up or not. Much of this depends on other factors a major one being our fatty acid intake quality and quantity. The medical profession now seems pretty relaxed on ingested Cholesterol levels in the diet, eggs are OK again... Hooray! What is advised is to cut down on fats especially saturated (animal) and Trans-fats and eat more fibre/grains/seeds fruits and veg. Oats have also found to have some benefits as does benecol... and a drop of red!

The BHF info states as much:

No, I couldn't bring myself to eat a GP when I was there - I guess I'm too British, pets and all that if you know what I mean!

There can't be much meat on one can there?

Is it like rabbit?

Hardly any meat at all and the thing was sopping with fat (it had been deep fried). The meat was darker than rabbit I think.
