*warning, description of parts with names I do not know!!*

I replaced my rear cassette a couple of months ago. When repairing a puncture I noticed the cassette came away quite easily. The cassette is securely locked onto the spindly thing with the locking nut but the whole thing comes away if that makes sense.
Putting the wheel back hold holds is securely all back in the place and now it still comes away but a bit stickier.
Is it supposed to come away this easily?

Sounds like the lock ring has come loose. Did you torque it up sufficiently ?

Sounds more like the freehub is coming off of the hub.
Yes I think it is this. The cassette is securely locked to the cylinder it slides onto. But that whole thing can come away. At the base is what looks like little ratchet bits of metal that can be pushed in and out.
