Bike cleaning and chain lubing is the subject of endless debate and attracts religious levels of ferfour. The difficulty is that nobody has tested their own or other people's ideas in any scientific fashion.

I take my views from observing what motorcyclists do on much heavier and more powerful machines which wear chains very quickly. Some have auto chain lube which drips oil on the chain. These prolong chain and sprocket life over a chain which is manually cleaned and lubed. MOst motorcyclists conclude that an oily chain wears less quickly.

Does this have any relevance to bicycles? You decide. I'll just keep putting light oil on my chain and wiping off the excess with a rag. The grit tends to accumulate on the jockey wheels so I clean it off with a stick. Could I do better? Probably, but my transmission components seem to last longer than most.
