you'll have to be very precise with the chain length with such short dropouts. one of the advantages of track dropouts is that you can vary the gear (within reason) without having to split the chain. you won't be able to run a double hub with a sprocket on each side.

Are they short then, Alec? I've measured them at 27mm. Are there any other potential problems he should be aware of?

The dropouts will be fine provided he doesnt want to keep changing gear ratio.
The existing wheel doesnt have the correct threads or offset to fit a track sprocket to without some sort of bodge
