Apologies if this has already been discussed, but I did a search and couldn't find a thread... On my run back home from work I seem to be seeing more people these days running white rear lights. I've seen several in the past couple of weeks. Is this some form of I'm-going-to-be-clever-and-get-attention and therefore be safer kind of thing? It seems massively dumb to me to deliberately try to "trick" other road users this way (as well as illegal, I guess.) Maybe I'm missing something....

never seen that. where do you see them?

No cyclist has ever been killed by acting this way. It's not a problem. What's the point in getting exercised, anyone who hates cyclists is prejudiced the same as a racist, don't make excuses for them.

I'd not noticed, I'll have to keep an eye out. Is it lots of different bikes, or could you be seeing the same few people on different days? It _could_ be having a pair of identical lights and muddling up the front & back, then not caring. Or finding your rear is out of power and being too lazy to bother replacing the battery so just sticking the front on.

I do see them on my commute every now and then.
I did once point out to a chap that had a white rear light that it was illegal. His reply was, 'I know - don't care'
.

A cyclist is 200% more likely to be killed by a driver looking at porn on his mobile than by having a white rear light. Get over it, it's a trifle that affects nobody.

I sometimes tell drivers about nonfunctional lights if convenient when stopped at lights. They tend not to care as well.
I've had a lot of success with this. Presuming I can get them to actually listen to me, they've always appeared grateful when I've pointed out a dead brake or rear bulb. Much more appreciative than the ones I've pointed out the terrible overtaking manners to.
