Rear Mudguard Snapped!

Noticed a rubbing noise from the rear wheel about half way in this morning, unclipped and pulled the bike onto the pavement and my rear mudguard had snapped clean in two at the top of the wheel. No idea how it's happened, its a clean break, not shattered.

Had to loosen the bolts from the frame eyelets and pull it backwards and hooked it over the other half, it managed to stay in place until I got to work. Its now being held together by electrical insulation tape.Just hope they hold out until I can order some more at the weekend.

I thought SKS would be better than that, only been on the bike about 10 months.

Which SKS have you got?

I find the choromplastic ones nearly indestructible! I've had the front one turn in on it's self when a stick went up it and it still didn't break.

I wonder if the free end of mudguard got caught in the tread of your tyre and forced it upwards until it snapped.

Nearly 4 years on my commuter with SKS's. Certainly not 'usual' to break

They're the SKS Commuters

Got them because of the discs on the fork - there was no need to bend the stays around the caliper. Got the same kind (wider version) on my commuterised MTB as well and they have been on for 3 years without any problems and have had sticks and the like stuck in them.

Spooky, the same thing happened to mine yesteday, snapped clean off just in front of the crappy bracket supplied to mount to the rear caliper mounting. Mine were the 35mm roadie specific ones. Had a quick look at Halfrauds website reviews for similar SKS guards and it seems not an un-common occurence

Just had a look at the reviews on Halfords and 90% of them are pretty bad - all the same problem snapping at the top of the rear wheel. Strangely though most of the reviews on Wiggle are pretty good.

Must be a design fault with them and not tested properly or a faulty batch, as I said the ones on my MTB have been on a few years now. It only gets used occasionally so might not have been subjected to the same about of bouncing about and vibration as my regular commuter bike.

Looks like I'm ordering Chromoplastics, the split stays must offer more stability to the top of the guard.

The Commuter model is no-longer on the SKS website - must have been withdrawn from production. Down to problems with materials and design?

No problems with my SKS on two bikes. Think you've been unlucky,

My rear SKS fits to specific bosses on the frame, one under the brake bridge and one near the BB. The flexi brackets for the rear guards can be crap if you don't have direct mounting, that may be where the stress happened on the guard.

Tied too tight to the frame?

I've had the bracket snap in two on some sks mtb (26" ones).

mine went after four/five years, where it comes closest to the seat tube, decent make, I suppose considering how lightweight they are you can only expect them to last to so many years of wear and tear and shock and weather

The SKS guards on the road bike usually snap because the Scottish roads are crap, I been on the carpet down here and they lasted longer until I went home for Christmas; a fortnight up north and they snapped again. In the past I've emailed SKS and they've sent a new set from Germany for free but for some reason never this year.

Mine did exactly the same for no apparent reason, changed them for chromoplastics and no problems since.
