Rechargeable batteries.

Afternoon all. I've just bought a new (well, used) camera and it uses AA batteries, which it eats up at a ferocious rate - possibly because I've been playing with the camera a lot!

I therefore dug out my old battery charger, but can't find the rechargeable batteries that went with it. Is it safe to buy any rechargeable NiMh AA batteries to put in this charger? Or has technology moved on too much in the last 10 years or so?

I don't want to have to buy a new charger if I can help it, but I also don't want to burn my house down!

Any advice appreciated.

Get Duracell or some other decent brand and 2500mah if it's for a battery hungry camera. Learnt the hard way...

I agree, get 2500mah. Or more? Though price may start rocketing up.
Well done on finding a camera taking AAs, far too many bespoke charges around in my view - too much electronic stuff to take comfortably when cycle camping. Things are better with usb now, but still AA battery charger (GPS & some lights), USB charger (phone & other lights), camera batter charger. It was better in the ‘90s.

Just be aware that the rechargeable NiMH ones are rated at 1.2v as opposed to 1.5v for the disposable ones, shouldn’t make much difference in most applications. Try the Eneloop batteries http://main.panasonic-eneloop.eu/ they hold their charge when not being used unlike NiMH.

My Pentax won't work on rechargeables for this reason.

Rechargeables worked in my FinePix, but only for a very short time.
I tried different rechargeables but in the end went back to disposables.

Me too. I bought their own brands once, stick to Duracell now. Good for printer ink as well.

Hmm - food for thought. The camera is a Finepix HS10; my previous one was a Finepix S6500 and the rechargeables lasted quite well so I'm hopeful . . .

The camera I was referring to is a FinePix S9500, I have (almost) never used the flash, and use the cam mostly outside throughout the year, if that made any difference.

I also have one of those, & yes, they last very well indeed
A nice camera too, for what it is (and the cost)

Most of what's been on here, from me, has been taken with a Fuji XP10
Handy to slip in a jersey pocket, & totally weatherproof

My other 'biggie' is a Fuji S4400, & that's atrocious
It will flatten a set in a day, be they freshly charged, or even a set of Ever-Ready Lithiums, so presumably it's got a fault?
Which is sad, given the zoom on it!
